Near Loughrea in East Galway fourth generation conservationists, Leahy Beekeeping, offer a fascinating and highly educational beekeeping experience to individuals, families and groups. Set in an area of conservation in the beautifiul Sliabh Aughty Mountains, Noel Leahy and family members introduce visitors to the way bees work, the importance to the environment of what they do, and the different seasonal flowers and herbs they use to make their honey.
Pre-booked tours of one and a half or four hours are offered, and groups can arrange to have bespoke tours at any time. The inner workings of the hive are explained, and how to identify the queen, workers and drones.
Afterwards, there's a tasting of some of their gorgeous 100% raw, single filtered and unpasteurised honeys, and a visit to the shop, where various types of raw honey are available to taste and to buy, along with other honey products and natural skincare products made from beeswax.
Ideal for anyone thinking of starting beekeeping, a visit to Leahy Beekeeping could be the beginning of a rewarding lifelong interest.
