Atmospherically set in the lovely old O'Brien's pub premises (with the original signage still in place), Marog and Sally O'Brien's wonderful Farmgate Lismore hit the ground running when it opened in summer 2024 - and is proving a magical addition to the heritage town.
They'd had plans for this historic Lismore premises for some time, but nobody could have predicted that devastating flood damage to their iconic Farmgate Restaurant & Country Store in Midleton (opened by Marog in 1983) would lead to them relocating the business to Lismore. But Midleton's loss is Lismore's gain and, as it's only half an hour or so away, it's bringing many regulars out for the (scenic) drive, as well as delighting new visitors to the town.Atmospherically set in the lovely old O'Brien's pub premises (with the original signage still in place), Marog and Sally O'Brien's wonderful Farmgate Lismore hit the ground running when it opened in summer 2024 - and is proving a magical addition to the heritage town.

Although the premises are too small to include the country store, so that has gone (at least for now), there's a sense of homecoming for fans of the original restaurant, who relish not only the renowned food and friendly service but also the quirky ambience. The traditional pub layout is still very much in place, which is part of its charm, along with the relocation of much-loved paintings, and Cork based artist Michael Quane's sculptures which work their magic inside and in an attractive garden with seating at the back.
Sally O’Brien welcomes guests warmly and you'll be seated in one of several characterful areas (including an alcove that can seat 10 for private dining), at tables or counters with high stools, or outdoors in fine weather. As you would expect from this team, the modern Irish menus are very appealing, with local producers well supported. Suppliers listed include the legendary McGrath’s Butchers and Vinilo bakery (both just down the street and must-see destinations if open at the time of your visit), Harringtons of Youghal (also for bread), Atlantis Wexford for fish, and Country Store Dungarvan for vegetables.
There will be plenty of familiar dishes, with favourites like Deep Fried Calamari with tomato chilli sauce and basil pesto, an excellent fish Chowder, classic Chicken Liver Paté with Cumberland sauce, Warm Chicken Ginger Salad and Ardsallagh Goat’s Cheese Salad all likely to feature among the starters. By the same token, main courses may include Traditional Duck Leg Confit, Roast McGrath’s Beef (with all the trimmings) and Pan-seared Free-range Chicken, along with a good vegetarian choice such as Garden Pea and fresh mint Risotto and a couple of fish dishes, plus a good selection of side dishes. None of which may sound very unusual - but the difference lies in the sheer quality and freshness of the ingredients, and the respect they are shown to allow them to be enjoyed at their best.
Equally delicious desserts may well include an Apple Crumble (allow extra time for hot puddings) and a refreshing Lemon Posset, and there’s also an excellent Irish cheeseboard featuring tiptop cheeses like the wonderfully unctuous Triple Rose from Armagh and the renowned Hegarty’s cheddars made nearby in Co Cork.
And there's a full licence, so wines (bubbles, still, dessert) are all available along with beers and spirits.
All round, this is an exceptional destination and it is beautifully located too, so it is well worth allowing plenty of time - not only to take your meal at leisure, but also to enjoy a scenic drive (through the Vee perhaps), explore the town and perhaps visit Lismore Castle Gardens (open mid-March to late October).
