The Newcomer award is always exciting and every year the nominations list is very long indeed. Even at a time when the talk is mainly of closures, optimism surfaces phoenix-like in the form of new businesses, with high hopes and the glow of long held dreams being fulfilled. And this one is very special. When Storm Babet hit the area last winter, Maróg and Sally O'Brien's iconic Farmgate Restaurant & Country Store in Midleton (opened by Maróg in 1983) suffered devastating flood damage and was beyond repair. The only positive was that they'd had plans for an historic premises in Lismore for some time and, while nobody could have predicted the events that would lead to the move, Midleton's loss has turned out to be Lismore's gain. And, atmospherically set in the lovely old O'Brien's pub premises (with the original signage still in place), their wonderful Farmgate Lismore hit the ground running when it opened in summer 2024 - and is proving a magical addition to the heritage town. There's a sense of homecoming for fans of the original restaurant, who relish not only the renowned food and friendly service but also the quirky ambience. The traditional pub layout is still very much in place, which is part of its charm, along with the relocation of much-loved paintings, and Cork based artist Michael Quane's sculptures which work their magic inside and in an attractive garden with seating at the back. An inspiring ray of hope for many struggling restaurateurs - and a must-visit for anyone coming to this beautiful, unspoilt area.
