Billed as "....A celebration of local flavours, sustainable practices, and the vibrant community that surrounds us", this charming place is set in the rolling south Kilkenny countryside, in the former Kilkieran Cottage Restaurant premises. A new venture by Bart and Michelle Surman, who are renowned for their Dizzy Goat Cheese brand, it not only showcases their own products (which include pork and wild boar), but also those from likeminded farmers and artisan producers who share their philosophy of organic, sustainable production.
On driving into the car park, arriving guests can look forward to a wonderful view over the rolling hills of south Kilkenny, with welcoming outdoor seating and well maintained grounds creating a sense of anticipation. Entering by the bright red traditional half door, you'll be greeted by Michelle and welcomed to their home, then you'll be shown straight to your table where you can relax and enjoy the views while making your choices.
The evening menu is refreshingly short, offering about five starters, five main courses and five desserts. Dishes are well chosen to include a nice balance of classics and unusual dishes - with old favourites like Chicken liver parfait and a Seafood bouilabaisse of seared scallops, langoustines and clams (with toasted baguette from Kilkenny's famed Aran Bakery to mop up the juices) sitting alongside a less usual house speciality of Steamed Dumplings that are stuffed with their own cheese. Mains are likely to showcase local meats - a Trio of Lamb perhaps (shoulder, rack and croquette), Chargrilled striploin steak, or Free range Pork Belly flavoured with organic Highbank Orchard apple cider - along with a Catch of the Day and an interesting vegetarian dish. All feature beautiful seasonal vegetables, both as integral parts of the dish and as sides. To finish you might enjoy a lovely light Eton Mess, which is made with rhubarb or other seasonal fruit.
Open since spring 2024, Dizzy Goat quickly established itself as a popular destination for local diners and many customers already know Michelle (who was formerly manager of the Kings Mill Restaurant in Kells, Co Kilkenny), which adds to the friendly atmosphere. All dishes are cooked to order, portions are generous and the service is well paced and homely. To accompany, the short wine list (appropriate for a small menu and family run restaurant) offers a well chosen selection of 4 white and 3 red wines, with very good tasting notes.
The Sunday lunch menu is also very appealing (children’s menu available) and this would make a delightful destination for a family day out.
Sitting looking out at the beautiful south Kilkenny countryside and the mountains beyond, it's hard to imagine a more relaxing place to be.
