Since the original Saba opened on Clarendon Street in 2006, followed by several Saba To Go takeaway locations, Saba has become synonymous with stylish dining offering flavourful and, above all, healthy Thai cooking. The very name Saba means “happy meeting place” in Thai, and the fresh and fragrant food crafted by head chef Taweesak (Tao) Trakoolwattana is core to this mission statement of happiness.
The newer Baggot Street location builds upon this theme with a warmly lit cocktail bar to the front separated from the main dining area by carved wooden screens. Banquet seats run the length of one wall, contrasting brightly against the darkly painted walls. Pops of colour come from scenes of Asian life, and even some framed satin Thai boxing shorts. It’s a cosy space, suitable for brunch with friends, family dinners and romantic dates.
The menu offers many tempting starters such as pork and prawn cakes with red curry paste and kaffir lime leaves, hoisin duck rolls, spicy tom yaam soup and sticky Saba chicken wings. The emphasis on flavour continues with a selection of stir-fries, curries, noodle dishes, salads and even some paleo options for the extremely health conscious. Saba is committed to sourcing from South East Asia where possible, otherwise from the finest Irish producers, and fresh herbs and vegetables are flown directly from Bangkok once a week.
House specials such as pan-fried John Dory fillets with Thai herbs, steamed fillets of seabass with black beans, ginger and soy sauce or even an unusual Vietnamese ice-cream sandwich add variety to the menu, which is clearly labelled with allergen information and heat level indicators.
Saba has longed placed an emphasis on having a strong cocktail offering and there’s a fine selection of classic cocktails and house creations available to complement the vibrant food. Alternatively, a modern wine list and selection of craft beers is available.
