Emily Furey realised her dream of owning a coffee house and café when she opened Kelly’s in Mountbellew in spring 2021. She says it just felt right when she first walked into this former pub on the square in the thriving market town - there's a cast-iron plaque detailing the history of the building (home of Colonel Thomas Kelly, who was rescued from a prison van in England by the three men who became known as the Manchester Martyrs) and, with gorgeous green paint, its own outdoor dining area and windows that open right out, it's now a very appealing spot.
The décor is beautiful, in greens, taupés and creams - and, with checked upholstered seat pads, cool industrial style lighting and lamps in nooks and crannies, it's a very pleasant place to be.
Heading up the kitchen team is chef Regis Herviaux, a Frenchman who has made his mark in a number of highly respected Irish kitchens - and it shows, in the quality, variety, flair and sheer flavour of everything on offer here.
Local suppliers and speciality Irish foods are the heros on lunch menus that tempt with a wide choice of of sandwiches and salads, and a good mix of pork, chicken and veggie combos. Wraps, Waterford Blaas, sourdough and organic ciabatta breads all feature, along with daily specials such as a chorizo quiche, in-house doughuts and all day waffles with fresh strawberries or other seasonal fruit. The waffles and superfood smoothies are a big hit with children and there is no specific children's menu, so they get to try a wider range of dishes.
Everything is a little bit different from what visitors might expect - you will get a little dish of black olives with your Andarl Farm Pulled Pork on a Waterford Blaa, for example, and naturally there is a very good Croque Monsieur on the lunch menu.
Breakfasts are hearty, with many having a base of sourdough from Coolfinn Organic Bakery, and the coffee is particularly good. There is always a soup and a quiche at lunchtime, details like dressings are oustanding, and desserts include Tarte aux Pommes, mini doughnuts and a cheesecake of the day, all served up by smartly attired, friendly and attentive staff.
All this and good value as well - no wonder Kelly's has not only proved a very welcome addition to the local dining scene, but it's made a name for itself as a destination café too.
