Visitors to this medieval town are delighted to find this charming fourth generation craft bakery, which has been pleasing customers (including the author, William Trevor) since 1901.
Nuala Hickey - who is an energetic member of the Tipperary Food Producers group, dedicated to showcasing the county's wonderful produce - now continues the family tradition, baking her unique traditional crusty bread, artisan bread, and cakes including the famous Hickey’s barm brack. Recognition for this speciality includes a gold in the 2010 Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards, and it is also available online.
The much-loved café did not re-open after the pandemic, but wholesome takeaway treats are available from the bakery counter. Here locals and visitors mingle cheerfully, choosing favourites like sausage rolls and quiche, or something more-ish from the lipsmacking range of cakes and pastries - which, along with a tea or coffee, can be enjoyed with on a bench outside the bakery or on the quayside.
