A big welcome and genuine hospitality are among the many USPs of Victor and Geraldine Mc Sweeney's immaculately maintained B&B just outside Ballyvaughan.
Another is that their daughter, Lesley, is a chef who not only grows a lot of the ingredients that are used for the breakfasts which are a point of pride (and also private catering for groups), but has also introduced a welcome extra in Hazelwood Bakery, which specialises in organic sourdough breads. A real treat for guests and they're on sale locally too, at Kinvara Farmers Market and Nolan’s Farm Shop at New Quay.
Hazelwood is also well situated, just a few minutes outside of Ballyvaughan village (although it's a busy road for walking), and en route to Aillwee Cave and Birds of Prey and the delightful Burren Fine Wine & Dine (see entries).
Everything about the house is very welcoming, from the large common room with plenty of books at hand, along with leaflets introducing the attractions and restaurants of the area, to the lovely gardens surrounding the house, which are Geraldine's pride and joy.
The hotel standard guest rooms include two suites and a triple room, so there is plenty of flexibility in the accommodation - and all of the rooms are spacious, exceptionally comfortable and absolutely pristine, making it a very pleasant base for longer stays exploring the area.
The McSweeneys are members of Burren Ecotourism Network(BEN) and the Burren Food Trail, so it's a given that food and the environment go hand in hand here. Breakfast is a highlight of any stay and you just might hear their hens calling quietly when you wake, announcing the arrival of your freshly laid eggs...
Although the buffet may not be available if restrictions are in place, a terrific table service choice is offered, including charcuterie and granola from the kitchen, if you wish, along with the more usual juices, cereals and porridge. Hot dishes include a fine rendition of the Full Irish (featuring Crowes Farm free range sausages) and vegetarian and vegan options are available too. Bacon Benedict (or Veggie Benedict) are other popular options, and they do a mean line in waffles - stacked with crispy bacon and a little jug of Canadian Maple Syrup, perhaps, or covered with strawberries or other seasonal fruits. Details are excellent - loose leaf tea in Le Creuset pots for example - and the service is delightfully engaged.
A meal like this is a great start for any day - and, of course, you'll get all the local lowdown from Victor as you start off to explore the area.
* Self catering is also available at the charming Hazelwood Cottage.
