“Apple juice is only as good as the apple”, so say David and Julia Keane, and they should know as they have been producing natural cold-pressed apple juice here to great acclaim since 1992.
Julia manages the business while David manages the 90 acre orchards, where they grow a number of varieties including Bramley, Cox’s and Egremont Russet, for retail sale and to produce their juices.
The process is admirably simple: the apples are hand picked and graded, those selected for juicing are then milled and pressed; the juice is allowed to stand and the only addition is vitamin C (to prevent oxidation, which would turn the juice brown). The cloudy, golden coloured juice is then pasteurised - which prevents spoilage without affecting the flavour - and that’s it, pure and simple.
Distinctive varieties to look out for include: Bramley and Cox (dry and crisp), Cox (sweet and aromatic), Summer Juice (mixed juice, deliciously light and sweet) and Egremont Russet (sweet, aromatic and intriguing).
The Keanes have won wide recognition for this pure and simple product, including Great Taste Awards, and their products are showcased at some very discerning hotels and restaurant as well as being available at quality-led retail outlets.
