Established in 1989, Birgitta and Peter Curtin's Burren Smokehouse is most famous for their organic smoked salmon. They exclusively use the renowned Organic Salmon from Ireland’s west coast and it is among Ireland's finest.
You can taste it at their Burren Smokehouse Visitor Centre (going since 1995), where they have an excellent shop with some crafts as well as their own smoked fish range (trout, mackerel) and a selection of other speciality products such as the Clare Jam range, local cheeses, biscuits to go with the salmon, seaweed products, honeys and locally produced chocolates.
The Burren Smokehouse also offers a unique experience to visitors, who can watch a short video about the smoking process (free of charge), look at the original first kiln that was used, and run their hands through the oak shavings used for smoking their salmon.
And of course everybody can taste the smoked salmon, before buying if they wish.
They also have a good online shop - and, just along the road, the Curtins run The Roadside Tavern - home to The Burren Brewery, good food and music – and the spacious venue and café, The Burren Storehouse, next door.
The Burren Smokehouse also attends food fairs, such as the Christmas Fair a tthe RDS in Dublin, and special events such as Food On The Edge in Galway.
