One of the best reasons to venture out from Kilkenny city to nearby Bennettsbridge is to visit the Nicholas Mosse Pottery in their old mill which is located in a lovely rural setting on the banks of the River Nore.

The restored mill is beautifully situated and very spacious, with two floors of pottery, including a large seconds area where some great bargains are to be found. The full range of products is wide, including glass and table linens, blankets, quilts and home accessories - as well as acres of the famous spongeware.

Their café is on the first floor, overlooking the river, and a lovely spot for lunch or teas; the food offering has been widened of late and you can now choose from a concise list of about ten appealing savoury dishes including ever-popular cottage pie and lasagne, quiches and a salmon and asparagus pie; served with good homemade breads, salads and chutneys, these make a tasty meal, and wine is now available too.

But good home baking has always been their big thing, including cakes and desserts like sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie - and, of course, delicious freshly-baked scones made with the local Mosse's flour, and sold with good coffee or tea.

Parking is easy and free and there's a lift in the store, also friendly staff who are always pleased to help. Worldwide shipping is offered, also mail order, gift wrapping, and a wedding service.
