Sligo, Co. Sligo
Sligo (Irish: Sligeach - translated as shelly place) (pronounced "sly-go"), is the county town of County Sligo. The Garavogue River runs through Sligo, the north-west’s most important town, which is situated between Lough Gill and the sea - and surrounded by a beautiful area of mountains and dramatic coastline, which invites exploration and is unusually uncrowded.
Sligo has a rich cultural heritage and, in the town, the Model Arts & Niland Gallery are especially worth visiting; there are many associations with the poet W.B Yeats and his brother, the painter Jack Yeats - the most notable connection was with Lissadell House at Drumcliff, the former home of the Gore-Booths, of whom the best known was Constance Gore-Booth who, as Countess Markievicz, was much involved with the Easter Rising of 1916; since the sale of Lissadell in 2003, the house is open to the public.
Between 1847 and 1851 over 30,000 people emigrated through the port of Sligo. On the Quays, overlooking the Garavogue River, is a memorial sculpture to those people. It is said that the picturesque Coney Island in Sligo bay gives its name to Coney Island in New York City.
