Known for its wholesome fare, notably great steaks and seafood, Paul and Leonie Granville’s family-run bar and restaurant is equally popular with local diners and hungry travellers (who nowadays make the very short detour from the bypass on the main Cork-Kerry road).
Appealingly presented with smart paintwork complementing th stone frontage, it is the oldest licensed premises in Macroom - and, situated just off the town square and in the footprint of the historic castle, it’s easy to spot.
Renovated from derelict in 2007, and again following a 2021 fire, it’s now a comfortable, welcoming place where you can dine or just have a quiet pint, a glass of wine or one of their speciality beers and read the newspaper. Old meets new very successfully, with features like open stonework, including a modern glass-enclosed wall-mounted fire.
Head chef Brian Granville's food style is hearty home cooking (sometimes with an exotic twist), based on fresh produce from local suppliers. Warming homemade soup of the day comes with Leonie’s home-baked breads (yeast and traditional soda) and hot dishes - both cooked to order and quick daily specials - like Golden Cork Toonsbridge Halloumi or Piri Piri Pan-seared fillet of Hake.
Kevin’s Lasagne is a popular order and there’s also a vegetarian version. And there’s plenty of wholesome food for the children too – it’s a very child-friendly establishment, with high chair and baby changing facilities.
On the à la carte menu, steak takes pride of place, with a 10oz Prime Irish Grass-fed Award Winning Hereford Sirloin heading up the mains, and an appealing range of fresh seafood from Kenmare. Another speciality to note is their Celebration of Irish Duck (Pan-seared Duck Breast, Slow Confit Duck Leg Lollipop & Duck Spring Roll).
Finish perhaps with an Old-fashioned Warm Sponge cake with a Crumble Top, delicious Apple centre, Vanilla Custard & Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream, a Warm Chocolate Brownie or a Lemon Meringue pie. All desserts here are homemade - and local suppliers are credited on menus too.
