Situated at the top of Main Street in Kenmare opposite the Landsdowne Hotel, this well known building was once a bank. Dating back to the early 19th century and full of character, it was opened as a restaurant and B&B in 1992, by the late Matt d’Arcy (formerly head chef at the nearby Park Hotel Kenmare) and his wife Aileen, who built up a national reputation for fine cooking and professional service.
It is named after Aileen's grandfather - the Antarctic explorer Tom Crean - and there is something very special about being surrounded by family memorabilia while you enjoy a meal cooked by Tom Crean’s granddaughter.
The name and appealing menus displayed on the smartly maintained building attract plenty of customers, who appreciate the warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere.
As well as the à la carte restaurant experience, Tom Crean offers casual dining in the Ice Bar where you can also just drop in for a drink - local craft beers are offered (including their own Expedition Red Ale), along with wines, prosecco on tap and non-alcoholic beverages.
Menus are based in locally sourced ingredients, which are cooked simply to allow the natural flavours to speak for themselves. While fish and shellfish are the main specialities – including lobster from the tank, and oysters - menus also include steak, pork, duck, plus vegetarian and vegan options, so there is something for everyone.
Accommodation is also offered and each room is themed around Irish Antarctic exploration.
*The Tom Crean Room is available for larger groups, or private dining (30).
