Having returned to his hometown to take over the former Loft Bar, Chef Michael McClafferty re-opened it as The Strand Road Bar & Kitchen in 2021 - and, undaunted by the pandemic, the reinvention undertaken by this proud young Falcarragh native has since continued apace.
Experience in setting up gastrobars elsewhere has stood him in good stead as he gradually upgraded different areas of this attractive premises, to create a smart cocktail bar and dining room as well as the main bar and a lovely big outdoor seating area at the back that's in great demand in summer .
It's a welcoming and family friendly spot, where helpful and chatty staff quickly make visitors of all ages feel at home while explaining well planned menus that are not overlong but offer plenty of tasty choice for everyone.
Popular dishes from around the world feature, especially in the starters (Korean fried chicken for example, or Chilli beef nachos), but local fish and meats are a speciality and - while seafood like mussels and scallops make frequent appearances too - old favourites tend to rule in mains like beer battered Killybegs cod and classic Sirloin steak with skinny fries, onion rings and pepper sauce... And the secret ingredient is Michael's experience, as careful cooking and attention to detail lift barfood staples into a different league, leaving everyone very happy to be here. Local drinks too, notably the excellent Kinnegar craft beer from Letterkenny.
And you can stay overnight as Strand House offers three rooms for guests, including a big one suitable for families. With great beaches nearby and so much to do in Donegal it would make a good base for a break - and there's live music too, adding to the youthful vibe of this pleasing place.
