In common ownership with the deservedly popular O'Connells pub at the head of Howth's East Pier (which was formerly called The Pier House), this classy little restaurant and wine bar opened quietly in a vacant spot on the West Pier between lockdowns in mid-2020 and, despite this inauspicious start, has all the ingredients for enduring success.
“Contemporary dining with fresh local seafood” is the promise from proprietor Simon O'Connell and his team and - although it would be nice to see specific provenance, especially the local suppliers - it is delivered with style and warmth.
Like its sister venue, it's an atmospheric spot, the walls densely hung with intriguing artwork and photographs of local interest (allow plenty of time to enjoy the corridor when going to the loo). Designed for comfort and relaxation, there's a lovely mix of furnishings and the lighting is especially pleasing.
Seafood, as expected, accounts for perhaps half of the shortish menu - including classic starters like Achill Island Oysters with sauce mignonette, perhaps, or Roaring Water Bay Mussels with garlic, white wine cream & parsley, and mains such as grilled sole on the bone as well as more modern dishes. But meat lovers should make a beeline for the excellent steaks, and vegetarians will have no cause for complaint with seriously tasty dishes like Handmade butternut squash goats cheese tortellini with sage butter on offer.
For dessert, don't miss the Chocolate Délice if it's on (even if you're not a chocoholic, the combination of luscious moussey chocolate with salted caramel and raspberry sorbet is a sure fire winner) and on the drinks list you'll find local craft beers as well as well chosen wines.
Lovely service adds to the feel-good factor at The Pier House - and the tables outside on the harbour are a hot ticket in fine weather.
