Jason and Mary Harris opened Soul Food Café on Belfast's Ormeau Road in 2004, with the aim of serving a small menu of carefully-chosen dishes made with lots of hero local ingredients.
They built up a loyal following for their excellent coffee, adventurous yet accessible cooking and Jason's insistence on cooking everything from fresh.
Now, while still on the Ormeau Road, the café has moved to larger premises, upstairs above the Bengal Brasserie. And, a decade on, they're still packing them in.
Regulars love their breakfast grills, home-baked scones, granola, soups, salads, sandwiches and cakes. There is always a daily hot special and the tea and coffee are both locally sourced.
Expect things like Jason’s Tuscan bean soup, goat’s cheese salad and in-house gluten-free friands. New additions to the original menu include fish pie, macaroni cheese, homemade baked beans and wheatgrass shots.
Jason's wife Mary is front of house and she heads up a great staff. They eat the food, drink the tea and coffee and always taste the specials - and they are attentive but never obtrusive. Their system works like clockwork and the menu is with you as soon as you sit down. No wonder this place is so popular.
