The main business is now located in Derry, but this is where it all started for Kemal Scarpello's legendary sourdough bakery.
Aka the Slow Food Co, this purpose built bakery (“Ireland's first fully functional Wood Fired Brick Oven Bakery!”) at the Scarpello family home near Burt earned a reputation well beyond the iommediate area for its superb sourdough and other breads, including traditional Irish breads, and wood-fired pizza.
A self-confessed obsessive when it comes to quality food, especially bread, Kemal is an ardent supporter of Slow Food and the Real Bread movement and he emphasises the importance of using as few ingredients as possible - but of the very best quality - in breadmaking.
It is an artisan process and the total production, which is not large, is mainly delivered to local shops and restaurants, although orders are also accepted for individual deliveries in the local area.
Visitors will spot Kemal's products in some lovely destinations including, of course, at the newer Scarpello Bakehouse and Pizzeria on the Buncrana Road, Derry.
