Renowned for their meats (and, especially, the award winning sausages), their friendly knowledgeable staff, and simply for being the social hub of the village, Nolan's has been getting it right since 1886.
Fourth generation butcher, James Nolan, continues the proud tradition (albeit in a smart modern shop these days, behind the traditional frontage) and the great and good, including top chefs, go out of their way to shop here - they know that Nolan's animals are hand selected from local farmers and, with everything from abattoir to processing on-site, there is total traceability and trust.
Also well-stocked with other topnotch foods - fish, vegetables, breads, artisan cheese, deli and wine.
James Nolan and his team may go quietly about their pursuit of excellence, but it goes not go unnoticed.
Their well-earned accolades (and there are many) include success at the Great Taste Awards, a Rural Oscar from the UK's Countryside Alliance in 2015 and the huge achievement of winning the title Champion of Champions - Best Butchers Shop in the U.K. & Ireland, which was presented at at the House of Lords, London in 2015.
Then, in May 2016, having won no less than five gold medals at The World Cup Craft Butcher Finals at the Global Food Fair in Frankfurt, Nolan's came home with the top gong, the Outstanding Achievement Award.
An outstanding shop - and well worth a special journey, never mind a detour.
