Furnished in keeping with its dramatic history and theatrical character, this Gothic Revival castle in the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains is at the centre of a very large estate with 650 acres of parkland and formal gardens.
Public areas include a library bar, Georgian style dining room, Louis XV drawing room and an atmospheric Dungeon Bar.
Bedrooms vary and the best are big and romantic, with great country views. Known as a successful wedding venue, it has atmospheric, medieval-style banqueting/conference facilities and also a small leisure centre (no swimming pool).
The castle is haunted (of course) and at its best a stay here can be great fun, but make sure you don’t leave your sense of humour at home.
Olde-worlde character and interested staff who contribute to the overall sense of fun are the things that make a visit to this hotel worth considering, and it should come as no surprise that wacky events including a Ghost Fest are held from time to time.
