This modern four-star hotel in the outskirts of Athlone is part of the So Hotels group which is owned by Pat McDonagh, founder of the popular fast food chain Supermacs.
It is a well-run, well-maintained hotel which deserves its star rating and, while not perhaps the most obvious choice for a Hidden Heartlands break, it makes an excellent base to explore a wide area as well as having easy access to the town.
Friendly and accommodating staff ensure that all are made very welcome, including families who will find masses of things to do nearby.
The décor is contemporary yet it feels cosy thanks to soft lighting and furnishings and the communal areas are very well kept. The same high standards apply to bedrooms, which are extremely comfortable, many having been refurbished recently.
Although designed to accommodate a large number, the Cedar Brasserie is attractive. Divided into two areas - the bar and the restaurant with floor to ceiling windows through double doors - it is comfortably furnished and the good food from Head Chef Martin Duffy’s kitchen offers plenty of crowd-pleasers. Local ingredients, such as Roscommon lamb,.feature and there's a lot of care in the detail - including children's menus, which include information about portion sizes and offer steamed vegetables.
With ample parking, plenty of space and good on-site amenities, Athlone Springs is a popular spot for weddings, conferences, live music and casual dining as well as a stop-off for travellers - but it's also well worth considering for a staycation, especially with family in tow. Athlone Town is known for interesting pubs and good restaurants - and, with attractions like Athlone Castle, Glendeer Pet Farm, Lough Boora, Kilbeggan Distillery, Clonmacnoise and water sports at Hodson Bay nearby, there is plenty to please all interests and every age group.
