Set in the wonderfully unspoilt West Waterford countryside, Pat and Gertie Ormond's charming 19th century farmhouse is only 10 kilometres from bustling Dungarvan - but it’s also very close to the Waterford Greenway, St Declans Way and the Comeragh Mountains, so just the spot for a peaceful rural getaway with a focus on outdoor activities and the enjoyment of nature.
And this is no ordinary B&B. Not a posh country house but a comfortable family home with lovely big rooms, where the emphasis is on genuine hospitality, relaxation for guests – and very good food. Pat and Gertie have many years experience in hospitality (and many a tale to tell), and – having trained and worked with some exceptional people including Darina Allen, Jane Grigson and even the great John Tovey of Miller Howe in the Lake District - Gertie’s cooking is legendary. So you may be sure that everything will be memorable here, from the welcoming cup of tea and cake on arrival – served in the orchard garden, perhaps, in summer, or fireside in the lovely sitting room on chilly days - to the freshly prepared breakfasts, offering everything from freshly squeezed orange juice and garden fruits to a full hot menu. And there’s more in store, as Gertie will also pack a delicious picnic for your rural ramblings – and even serve a 3-course evening meal to a menu of your choosing.
And then there’s Pat, with all the easy going warmth of a natural host and the local knowledge that will help every guest get the most of their visit - whether it's local history, sorting out activities like fishing, hiking or cycling, or just the best place to chill, he’s the man to point you in the right direction.
What Pat and Gertie share with their guests at Kilcannon House is a real taste of rural Ireland – so just remember to slow down and take in sights like the horses grazing contentedly in quiet grassland outside your bedroom window, and be glad that you found it.
