Opened with aplomb in 2005, this large luxury hotel is set in the Laois countryside, just off the main Dublin-Cork road (M7).
In 2014 it was purchased by the current owner, the American software developer, Adrian Carmack; the adjacent golf complex was bought by a consortium of local and overseas investors in the same year, and is now run independently.
An impressive atrium sets the tone as you enter the hotel and, with a bifurcated staircase, crystal chandeliers and marbled floors, this lobby is designed to impress; other public areas are spacious and furnished in a similar style.
Generous accommodation is in sumptuously furnished suites and guest rooms, which are extremely comfortable - and have beautiful bathrooms with separate shower and bath - although, surprisingly, some rooms do not have a view.
Breakfast is served in Blake's, and a cold buffet offering a good spread of fruits, breads, cereals, cheese and salamis is displayed in an adjoining room. Unusually, there are three milks available: full, low fat and skimmed - and there's a generous gluten free corner, with breads and cereals on offer. Hot dishes include pancakes, omelettes, smoked salmon, various eggs (Benedict, Florentine) and of course the full Irish - no surprises, perhaps, but the quality is top notch.
But exceptional leisure facilities are the trump card at this hotel - as well as the neighbouring golf complex, there is a health club and spa, tennis, and a 5K ground lit walking and jogging track around the golf course
Fine dining is offered in Blake's (open 7 days), and food is served up to 9.30pm daily in The Seven Bar. Afternoon Tea in The Galleria is also very popular (1pm-3pm daily). Executive Chef Ian Clifford takes pride in showcasing the best of local and Irish produce, and the main suppliers are given due credit.
Nearby, an informal dining option is available at Soloriens Steakhouse & Italian Restaurant, at the golf resort.
