Woodland trails, an ancient fairy fort, the largest sundial in Ireland, playground and four Celtic gardens – this is Brigit’s Garden in Rosscahill, a short distance off the Galway-Clifden Road and one of the best places for a family day out in the area. There’s so much here for the whole family to enjoy - exploring, playing, discovering and of course, eating.
With huge picture windows overlooking the outdoor patio where you can dine when the weather is good, the café offers simple, but delicious food. A new chef, Aitor Martoquin has recently joined the team and is continuing the policy of fresh, local foods and herbs and edible flowers from their own garden. Many dishes are vegetarian and vegan – organic sourdough toasties have fillings such as goats’ cheese with caramelised red pepper and roasted mushroom. Salads may include falafel, beetroot and couscous with muhammara sauce (a delicious mix of roasted pepper and nuts).
Chickpea curry with roast vegetable, coconut and coriander may perhaps be the hot dish of the day, while children will be happy with a ham and cheese tortilla roll-up or penne pasta with tomato sauce and mozzarella.
Check out the shop before you leave as it has some unusual items on the shelves that reflect the philosophy of the garden. Good toilets too, including baby changing facilities, and environmentally friendly waste disposal.
Special events are held during the year – Hallowe’en bonfire, Elves and Fairies Day, Easter egg hunt and Forest bathing walks.
And if you want a magical space for a fairy tale wedding, baby naming or christening ceremony, or your child’s birthday party, Brigit’s Garden is sure to make the day memorable.
