A smart refurb of the former Lighthouse Restaurant premises on the quays in Wicklow Town makes a great setting for a first venture by a talented hospitality duo - Greg Murphy and Ruadhan Furlong, formerly general manager and head chef respectively at the celebrated Marlfield House in Gorey, hit the ground running when they opened here in July 2020.
The owners' distinguished pedigree alone ensured that it would make waves and diners from Wicklow and beyond, including many old Lighthouse customers, wasted no time in checking out Blue Seafood & Bistro - much to the satisfaction of all.
Showcasing 'the finest of fresh seafood and more besides' the pair’s experience and expertise is the USP, whether it’s in Ruadhan's appealing and precise cooking, or the friendly and professional service of Greg and his front of house team.
The bright interior is simple, fresh and contemporary with white ladder back chairs sporting turquoise cushions, welcoming fresh flowers on the simply-laid grey-topped tables and an open kitchen adding interest .At the other end, big windows allow diners to enjoy views over Wicklow harbour and, on fine days, there may be a couple of al fresco tables available too.
Fresh seafood is the focus, of course, and a seafood sharing platter for two would make a very good start, while main courses ranging from John Dory with a mussel beurre blanc, to hake with a crayfish salsa, and a surf and turf combo of 8oz rib eye steak and pan fried prawns would be hard to choose from.
But Blue aims to cater for all tastes (and dietary requirements) so you'll find plenty of other choices too - slow braised lamb shoulder, perhaps, or chicken supreme with creamy mash and a chorizo cassoulet - and daily specials are offered, along with vegetarian and vegan dishes, and a children’s menu.
Desserts include much-loved classics such as panna cotta or a homemade chocolate brownie - perhaps accompanied by pistachio ice cream - and theer's a selection of local farmhouse cheeses too, tempting you perhaps to look again at the short but carefully chosen and reasonably priced wine list, which ffers many by the glass.
The cooking at Blue is accomplished and, as so often with classically trained chefs, the details - such as the delicious homemade breads and dips that start a meal here - are memorable, as is the warm and knowledgeable service.
This exciting bistro has a lot to offer and location is inviting - its well-deserved early popularity looks set to last.
