Popular fishmonger and former fisherman Ali Galivandy supplies a good range of ultra fresh local fish daily, and is known for giving good customer service.
His experience with Irish fish and fishing goes back to 1981, when he started on the trawlers at Rossaveal, and he opened his first fish shop, Mermaid Fish Mongers (now Ali's Fish Shop), on Henry Street in Galway City in 1993. Its success, and that of the related wholesale and export operation Four Leaf Clover, led to the opening of the second shop in Barna in 2010, and it is now a popular destination for fish lovers on a day out.
Although Ali also stocks some 'exotic' fish from warm waters, 95% of the fish on sale is locally landed and most of it comes from long liners and seine fishing 'because I know that is the best quality fish.'
Fresh, smoked and frozen fish and shellfish is on sale, and there is no shortage of suggestions and recipes for customers looking for cooking advice. Ali's also stocks sauces and condiments, including the locally made Builin Blasta sauces and dressings from Spiddal.
