Having lain dormant for nearly five years, this famous hotel at Marble Hill Strand was reopened by new owner Warren McCarthy in 2016, following major refurbishment.

Set in a prime location above one of the most famous beaches on the Wild Atlantic Way, the hotel dates back to the 1940s and - although it has been has been completely renovated to a four star standard and is effectively a new hotel - its major USP is unchanged: the stunning views of Sheephaven Bay from every one of the comfortable and smartly decorated bedrooms.

Pleasingly appointed public areas encourage guests to relax in the comfortable bar, enjoy afternoon tea by the open fire in the lobby, or savour the delicious food in the restaurant. An attractive outdoor terrace is just the spot to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail and there is also live music on most nights in the bar, where good casual dining is offered from 1-8pm daily.

The Shandon Restaurant is a traditionally appointed fine dining destination, offering excellent classically inspired cooking with a focus on local ingredients (such as Burtonport crab and meats from McCarrons of Raphoe) and friendly, very professional service to match. Alongside classical favourites like prawn bisque and loin of lamb with minted pea puree, you\'ll find some international influences on Executive chef Anthony Finn\'s menus, in dishes such as Moroccan inspired lamb spring rolls and Thai curried monkfish, but the core ingredients are proudly local.

Breakfast is of the same high standard, with hot dishes cooked to order and a well stocked buffet offering  cereals, fruits, yoghurts, pastries and a pancake maker.

Building on the hotel\'s longheld reputation as a family holiday destination, excellent on-site leisure amenities include a leisure centre with a swimming pool along with an outdoor tennis court, a children’s activity centre, and an outdoor life size chess board. For adult guests, a highlight of any visit is the world class spa which offers unforgettable views from the thermal pool and relaxation room and on warm days, or if you’re feeling brave, there is an outdoor Canadian hot tub also complete with spectacular views. The spa offers discounted treatments to hotel guests, starting from just €25.

Although it\'s a bit of a climb back up the hill on the homeward leg, the hotel offers easy access to the beautiful beach below and there are plenty of interesting local attractions to suit all ages, including Dunlewey Castle, Ards Priory, Dunfanaghy Workhouse and of course the majestic Glenveigh National Park. Dunfanaghy golf club and the equestrian centre at Dunfanaghy Stables are also within easy reach.

The Shandon is fast re-establishing itself as central to the local community, hosting weddings and also local events such as charity balls and fashion shows.

With its stunning setting, comfortable surroundings and excellent amenities this hotel is a must visit, whether you’re looking for a family break, a pampering weekend or even a romantic getaway.
