Seats 50 (private room 15-20). Open: Mon bar only 8pm-11pm. Wed-Fri D 4pm-8.30pm, Sat 12.30pm-8.30pm, Sun L sittings 12.30pm or 2.30pm (booking advised) & D 5pm-7.30pm. Bar meals Fri-Sat from 12.30pm. Days & hours may vary. Children welcome. Toilets wheelchair accessible. Parking. Closed Tue, 25 Dec.

This characterful little thatched pub and restaurant just outside Birr shows just how pleasing a genuine, well-run country pub can be.

Des Connole, proprietor since 1991, has achieved a well-earned reputation for the immaculate maintenance and atmosphere of the pub, and both bar food and restaurant meals offer generous portions for a reasonable price.

Angus steaks, roast duckling and classic fish dishes are among the favourites here, but vegetarians have specialities too - and the lovely staff make sure that everyone goes home happy.
