Stella Maris Shore House
Built in 1853 as a coastguard regional headquarters, this fine property on the edge of the wonderfully away-from-it-all village of Ballycastle was later acquired by the Sisters of Mercy, who named it Stella Maris, and it now makes a very special small hotel. Originally restored by returning Ballycastle woman Frances Kelly and her American husband, Terence McSweeney, it has since been taken over by Swiss native Rolf Siegris, who welcomed his first guests in 2024 and has opened it up more to non-residents which brings a livelier ambience to this lovely place.
Rooms 11 (1 suite, 6 shower only, 1 ground floor, 1 wheelchair friendly, all no smoking). B&B from about €220 per room. Children welcome. Non-residents welcome: Breakfast (book online), conservatory Coffee House ('barista coffee, tea and small sweets from our own kitchen or handmade from the neighbourhood') Fri-Sun 1-5pm; light evening meal (sharing platters etc). Full bar. Walking; fishing. Garden. Equestrian and golf nearby. No pets. Closed Oct-May. MasterCard, Visa.

Built in 1853 as a coastguard regional headquarters, this fine shoreside property on the edge of the wonderfully away-from-it-all village of Ballycastle was later acquired by the Sisters of Mercy, who named it Stella Maris.
It now makes a very special small hotel, originally restored by the former proprietor Frances Kelly and her late husband, Terence McSweeney, who created a warm and stylish interior where antiques rub shoulders with contemporary pieces. It has since been upgraded by the hospitable new owner, Swiss native Rolf Siegris, who welcomed his first guests in 2024 and has opened the hotel up more to non-residents, who can book for a full breakfast and drop in for tasty light bites with a regional flavour at other times.
There’s an emphasis on comfort throughout public areas, including a cosy bar - but the location is this hotel’s biggest asset and a conservatory built all along the front takes full advantage of it, allowing guests to relax in comfort and warmth while drinking in the majestic views of the surrounding coastline and sea.
Accommodation blends understated elegance with comfort in uncluttered rooms that have magnificent views and are furnished with antiques but - with complimentary broadband, modern bathrooms and power showers - offer the best of both worlds.
This is indeed a wonderful retreat. Short breaks offered - details on application.
