Alan and Margaret Brown’s Old Cable House has Victorian character and the added interest of its transatlantic cable history.
It is set high above the town to give clear Atlantic views, and the simply furnished rooms have everything necessary (including en-suite facilities) but with the emphasis on Victorian atmosphere; some of the rooms are small by modern standards, but the pine floors and original sash windows give authenticity for those who appreciate vernacular architecture. There are three newer disability-friendly rooms on the ground floor
The restaurant offers what the Browns correctly describe as unpretentious good food with character: Alan, who is the chef, lays the emphasis on seafood and locally sourced meats served in an hospitable atmosphere.
Waterville Golf Club is on the doorstep, of course, and there are many interesting things to do when staying here.
