Noel and Lorna Bourke relocated from London to start a new business here on the Sheeps Head peninsula, where their boutique B&B, Gallán Mor (named after a standing stone in their garden), is perched high on a hill with stunning views over Dunmanus Bay.
It was built on the site of a derelict cottage and, while they weren’t able to save much of the original house, they incorporated some of the old stone into the new building, including the big open fireplace on the ground floor.
No expense has been spared on construction and they’ve lavished TLC on the interior too. Lorna is from Grenada in the West Indies and she had some beautiful beds custom-made there and shipped over, then dressed them with Irish-made King Koil mattresses and top quality bedding including goose down duvets and pillows (with non-allergenic alternatives available on request).
The smart en-suites have power showers and quality toiletries, and rooms also boast comfy chairs, hospitality trays, WiFi and satellite television - although, with such beautiful sea and mountain views to enjoy, many guests will be happy to leave television and laptops switched off.
Noel has made great progress with the garden, and they have also built an outside hot tub, which would be a magic spot to while away warm summer evenings.
The pubs and restaurants of Durrus are not far away and food offered is usually restricted to breakfast - simple, home baked and locally sourced food - but they do offer some special breaks (Valentine’s, St Patrick’s Day etc) which include dinner.
This 4* B&B is perfectly positioned for many outdoor activities - including walking the Sheeps Head Way, of course - and for exploring the South-West.
Noel and Lorna are a lovely, hospitable couple, their house is extremely comfortable and the setting is magic. A stay here is sure to be memorable.
