Although often seriously over-crowded with tourists in summer, this famous and genuinely characterful old pub in the shadow of Bunratty Castle somehow manages to provide cheerful service and consistently above-average food to the great numbers who pass through its doors.

Bar food 12pm-10pm daily. Oyster Restaurant: L 12pm-5.30pm; à la carte 5.30pm-10pm. Special D, €29.50 pp + 10%sc (includes half carafe wine). The Loft Restaurant: D 5.30-10pm. Music 7 nights. Closed 25 Dec, Good Fri. Amex, MasterCard, Visa.

All-day fare is served downstairs in the bar (noon-10pm) and the Oyster Restaurant (lunch and dinner); upstairs there is a more exclusive restaurant, The Loft, open in the evening only (5.30-10pm). Both areas offer à la carte menus.
