The Foyle family's stunning beachside house just west of Clifden is set in 14 acres of wilderness, which makes a wonderful contrast to the style and comfort within.
The house, which has an early 19th century farmhouse at its heart, was renovated and extended by Billy and Barbara Foyle, who then opened for guests in 1998. Since then it has become legendary for its magical location, laid-back relaxation and great food - and, above all, the hospitality of the Foyle family.
Those familiar with the old Foyle magic (Rosleague Manor, The Quay House, Foyles Hotel...) will find it a-plenty here, where the family talent for creating original interiors is seen especially in Billy's unusual woodwork - bedheads, mirror frames, anything that takes his fancy - which brings a delightfully quirky element to the fresh style of this warm and friendly house.
There's a wonderful feeling of quality throughout: bedrooms - all with magnificent views - are finished to a very high standard, with antique furniture, pristine bedlinen, lovely bathrooms and underfloor heating; television and tea/coffee making facilities are available on request. There's also a cosy and very homely sitting room with an open fire that's perfect to retreat to when the weather is chilly - and, for warmer days, a little cove with safe swimming at the bottom of the garden.
It is now run by Billy and Barbara's daughter Clodagh and son Fearghus, who bring new energy and enthusiasm to this unique house and the atmosphere is delightful.
The family grow their own organic vegetables too, and these, together with other local produce, notably seafood and Connemara lamb, are used to make memorable evening meals (ask about dinner when booking your room). The dining room is in a prime corner location overlooking the beach; it can opened up in fine summer weather, and tables moved out onto the terrace - unforgettable. Breakfast follows the same philosophy and you can even collect your own free-range eggs for breakfast.
Many regulars at Dolphin Beach would say this is their favourite place in the world - and it is easy to see why.
