The farm is in muck. It is cold, wet and dreary so I am glad we will finish milking in mid December. At present we are milking 60 cows once a day. The other cows have been dried off. Calves born earlier this spring have been housed for the winter and heifers (first time calvers) have been brought back to the home farm.

As Christmas comes round again and I inevitably start planning on making it really easy this year (this never works) my mind runs to all the foods which have become a compulsory addition to the table for Christmas dinner and I start thinking of the ones I could discreetly eliminate.

Ok, so here's a confession. In almost ten years of growing I've never managed to successfully grow that quintessential Christmas crop, the Brussels sprout. This has been somewhat irksome as I am a fan of sprouts and generally speaking, really in to the idea of vegetables that grow well over winter.
