Hastings Culloden Estate & Spa
Georgina Campbell
Formerly the official palace for the Bishops of Down, the Culloden is romantically set in beautifully maintained gardens and woodland overlooking Belfast Lough and the County Antrim coastline.
The building is a fine example of 19th-century Scottish Baronial architecture with plasterwork ceilings, stained glass windows, an imposing staircase and spacious high ceilinged rooms - and, with its period furniture and fine paintings, it makes an impressive wedding venues, with interesting photo opportunities both indoors and in the grounds.
There are churches of all denominations to choose from in the area, the hotel is licensed to hold weddings on the premises and wedding blessings can be arranged here too. A full wedding planning service is not offered and decor for the event is up to the bride and groom, although the hotel will make suggestions and help with costing (eg chair covers are £7).
Receptions are held in several different areas, depending on the number of guests: use of the Stuart Suite requires a minimum of 130 guests, but there are several rooms suitable for about 50 and very small weddings (under 20) can be hosted in the Cameron Room; however, exclusive use of the hotel is not available, so it is possible that there could be more than one wedding on your day.
The Culloden has always taken pride in its food and the cooking is classic; a choice of menus ranges from a buffet to a 7-course Gourmet Menu. Very comfortable accommodation is offered, in spacious, traditionally decorated guest rooms and suites, many overlooking the lough; unusually, the bride and groom may take up their complimentary accommodation at any of the five Hastings hotels in Northern Ireland.
Other extras offered include Spa Hen Packages for pre-wedding beautifying and a post-wedding barbecue at ‘Cultra Inn’, a bar and informal restaurant in the grounds.
