Gorman's Clifftop House and Restaurant
Georgina Campbell
Beautifully situated near Smerwick Harbour on the Slea Head scenic drive and Dingle Way walking route, Sile and Vincent Gorman’s guesthouse and restaurant is a magical place for a small, intimate alternative style wedding which, as Sile says, “depends on our wonderful location, my hospitality and Vincent’s cooking”.
Nearby churches include a Catholic one just a quarter of a mile away and a Church of Ireland in Dingle town, and blessings can be held here too - and, as this is such a spiritual area, some couples like to exchange vows at places like the nearby Gallarus Oratory, which is one of the best preserved Early Christian buildings in Ireland.
Sile and Vincent don’t offer a full wedding planning service, but they will help with any contacts needed locally and do everything possible to assist where possible, including arranging any special transport requirements or a musical welcome such as a piper. Natural materials and warm colours are a feature throughout the house and open fires, two generous lounging areas (and a lot of pottery from the nearby Louis Mulcahy workshops) create a welcoming laid-back atmosphere; there is plenty of space for guests to mill around - and the unusual layout of the house means that guests with children may not need to arrange a babysitting service.
The wedding feast is a 4-course dinner served in the restaurant, a large room in the prime position with large windows commanding superb sea views and, on fine evenings, spectacular sunsets - this is a wonderful place to enjoy Vincent Gorman’s good cooking and, when dressed up for a wedding (partly by the couple), it will have a great sense of occasion.
This wedding venues accommodation includes two junior suites with sea views and jacuzzi bath tubs and two other superior sea view rooms (all these have king size beds) and some rooms on the ground floor with easy access from the parking area; all rooms are attractively furnished in country style and very comfortable.
No doubt most guests will be glad of the opportunity to take a break in this magnificent part of the country, so it would be worth considering a longer stay than the two nights required for weddings.
