Brocka on the Water Restaurant
Georgina Campbell
Anthony and Anne Gernon’s almost-waterside restaurant on the north shore of Lough Derg has attracted a following disproportionate to its size over the years and makes a lovely venue for a small wedding. There are a number of churches to choose from nearby (Terryglass and Kilvarron are only 10 minutes away) and wedding blessings are possible in this lovely place.
Although it is in the family home, the atmosphere is very much a “proper restaurant” - yet with that special warmth of welcome that family-run restaurants often have, and arriving guests will notice hens clucking around a garden well-stocked with fruit and vegetables, promising the best of all possible good things to come.
An attractive reception room has an open fire and comfy chairs, and the meal is served in the adjoining dining room and a high-ceilinged conservatory which opens onto a patio and lush gardens. Although not the kind of place where a full-blown wedding planning service would be expected, Anne arranges every detail personally with the bride and groom, including decor co-ordinated with the wedding theme, and any special transport requirements can be arranged locally.
The wedding banquet can be a sit down meal (lunch or dinner), a buffet or a mixture of table service and buffet. Menus at Brock-on-the-Water are seasonal so choices depend on availability, but there are some specialities which might be included, such as delicious Cooleeney cheese croquettes with home-made chutney (Cooleeney is made locally by Breda Maher, on the family farm near Thurles).
Although this wedding venues got no guest rooms, there’s a choice of B&B, self-catering and hotel accommodation available within 10 miles - and this beautiful area is a very rewarding place for guests to take a break.
