Beaulieu House, Gardens and Car Museum
Georgina Campbell
Situated on the banks of the River Boyne, downstream from the town of Drogheda, Beaulieu was one of the first unfortified houses built in Ireland. It was built in the Dutch style between 1660 and 1666 for Sir Henry Tichbourne, of whom the present family are ninth generation descendants.
Beaulieu is quite unique in Ireland and makes an unusual and romantic location for a wedding - it is renowned for its walled garden and a large herbaceous border containing many rare plants, probably laid out in the 17th century by the artist and landscaper Van de Hagen, and there is a church in the grounds.
There is also a Church of Ireland and Catholic Church approximately 3km from the estate, and wedding blessings are possible at the house. Receptions can be held in the main rooms of the house and, for larger groups of over 70 guests, a marquee can be arranged on the lawn.
The wedding venues menus are worked out individually with each couple, on an ˆ la carte basis; hot and cold choices are available as well as buffet and table service. Overnight accommodation is not offered at the house, which is still occupied by the family, but two bedrooms are available for the wedding party to change, and discounted accommodation can be organised in nearby hotels, self- catering cottages and B&Bs for your guests.
A programme of activities can be arranged for guests staying in the area for a few days - Drogheda , ‘Gateway to the Boyne Valley’, is near world heritage sites like Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth and this area is a rewarding place to stay for an extra night or two.
