Ashford Castle
Georgina Campbell
Ireland’s grandest castle hotel, with a history going back to the early 13th century, Ashford is set in 350 acres of manicured gardens and beautiful parkland and - if a stunning setting, grandeur and tranquillity are among the criteria - it is probably Ireland’s most romantic wedding venues. Panelled walls, oil paintings, suits of armour and magnificent fireplaces adorn public rooms which have magnificent views of Lough Corrib, the River Cong and wooded parkland: it really is superb.
Nearby churches include Cong Church, which is just 2 minutes drive from the castle, and Ballintubber Church, about half an hour away - and wedding blessings are possible at the castle. A vintage car can be provided if required, and a piper can be arranged to welcome guests (€100).
Smaller weddings are held in the beautiful Connaught Room, which is the jewel in Ashford Castle’s culinary crown and can seat up to 40 guests, and weddings with exclusive use of the castle are in the much larger George V Dining Room, which seats up to 166.
Candles and flowers are provided on the tables and very little extra embellishment is required. Ashford Castle is known for the excellence of its food and Executive Head Chef Stefan Matz is one of Ireland’s finest; the style is broadly classical French, using the best of local ingredients - Galway Bay sole, Cleggan lobster, Connemara lamb - in sophisticated dishes that will delight the most discerning diner.
Accommodation at Ashford Castle varies, as is the way with old buildings, but it includes a number of impressive suites and junior suites, some with amazing views. Accommodation costs and booking restrictions for weddings vary seasonally: for exclusive use of the castle (83 rooms) the low season cost begins at €190 per room per night, including breakfast, rising to €456 in high season.
Low season weekend weddings must guarantee 2 nights at the Castle.
