Roscrea Castle & Heritage Centre

Roscrea Castle was originally erected by King John I of England. The later rectangular keep, known as Ormonde Castle, was built by James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormond some time before 1450.



What remains today consists of a gate tower, curtain walls and two corner towers. The castle rooms are furnished and some house exhibitions.



Built in the early 18th century in the Queen Anne style, Damer House is an example of pre-Palladian architecture. One of the rooms is furnished in period style. 


While opposite the Monastery next to the round tower at the Black Mills centre, there is a restored mill displaying original St. Cronan's high cross and pillar stone.

Opening Time:

Open daily, 5th April-end September, 10am-6pm. Last admission is 45 minutes before closing.

Admission Charge:

Adults €4; Child/Student €2; OAP/Group €3; Family €10.
