Early Christian Church & 15th Century Castle

Gallarus Oratory & Gallarus Castle

Gallarus Oratory is believed to be an early Christian church and is completely made of stone and resembles an upturned boat. it is one of the most famous landmarks on the Dingle Peninsula, it overlooks Smerwick Harbour and is situated close to Gallarus Castle. It is extremely well preserved and several archeological artifacts are to be found on the grounds of the Oratory.

In close proximity Gallarus Castle was built by the FitzGeralds and was built in the 15th century and is one of the few surviving castles on the Dingle peninsula. It is a four storey tower with a vaulted ceiling on the fourth floor; none of its battlements remain. Conservation works have been undertaken at the castle in recent years and the interior is fully accessible.
