Dromoland Castle Golf Club

Dromoland Castle Golf and Country Club has been in existence since 1962 and golf has been played for 43 years over the lush rolling tree lined landscape that drains into Dromoland Lough with the Castle as a backdrop.

The course has been entirely revamped over the past two years at a cost of over €5million. Course architects, Ron Kirby and JB Carr teamed up again following their success at the Old Head of Kinsale with the primary objective being to improve the drainage and try to inject some excitement into the layout.

One of Kirby's most dramatic moves towards achieving this objective was to completely eliminate the old 16th and 17th holes. In their place is now a very strong 4-3-5 finish in which the closing par-five is bordered on the left by water.  But the truth is that the entire 6,845 yard course received the Kirby treatment, with new tees, geens and fairways. He is especially proud of his new 16th, a strong par four with water in play off the tee and also on the approach shot to a well-guarded green.

Prior to the recent changes guests at Dromoland used it essentially as a base for trips to Ballybunion and Lahinch. The result of these extensive changes is nothing short of spectacular and now places Dromoland at the vanguard of "must play" golf destinations on the island of Ireland. Already the course has earned a reputation equalling that of Adare and Mount Juliet and the quality of the greens and tees is compared very favourably to the very best worldwide.
