Carlow Golf Club

Long acknowledged as one of the country's finest parkland courses, Carlow Golf Club was founded in 1899. The 6,570 yard par 70 course is naturally free draining and the sandy sub-soil has always made this a highly attractive venue to play at any time of year. Though the tantalising 10th hole has acquired a new tee, the Deerpark layout has changed little since 1981 with the emphasis still being on accurate iron play and a delicate short game to extricate yourself from trouble when required!

Then 2002 the club expanded to 27 holes with the opening of the new Oakpark layout. This comprises a fine nine hole course designed by Canadian Jeff Howes who, among other projects, worked with Jack Nicklaus on Mount Juliet. Located beyond the "old" 15th hole, the Oakpark nine has its own entrance. And by way of complementing the existing layout, it too rewards accurate approach play over charming, rolling terrain.

Famous Irish Ameateur and former captain of the Royal and Ancient Joe Carr loved the challenge of driving the par-four 10th, but it had a rather special visitor in 1934 when the great Gene Sarazen played an exhibition match there against Australian trick-shot specialist, Joe Kirkwood.
