To have a river running through a garden is a great blessing and Lisselan is a lovely case in point. The 30 acre garden is laid out on the banks of the River Adrigadeen, which provides gorgeous vitas along its sparkling expanse, to a wisteria covered bridge here and an island with a water lily pond there.

Riverside walks to sooth the senses march beside the burbling water. The river is also responsible for the appealing topography, which suits the Robinsonian style of the garden, laid out for the Bence-Jones family around a house in French Chateau style by architect Lewis Vulliamy.

Reginald Bence-Jones caused the river to be widened to make a lake, and he and his wife were largely responsible for the garden on both sides of the river and also for the terrace below the house. Beneath it the steep sides of the valley provide a wonderful excuse for a rockery full of ferns, primula, cyclamen and dianthus.

Flagstone walks wind around the sides of the valley to different features, through the azalea garden and rose pergola, and through a stroll known as the Ladies’ Mile lined with colourful shrubs, great banks of rhododendrons, Japanese maples, myrtles, Judas trees and robinia.
