This hospitable Georgian house on the shores of Lough Conn was built by ancestors of the present owner, Susan Kellett, who settled here in the 1660s - and it is a very special place for anglers and other visitors with a natural empathy for the untamed wildness of the area.
The house is surrounded by woodlands, where Susan has built an extensive network of paths, and in recent years she has also undertaken major renovations in the gardens, which are part of the Ireland West Garden Trail. The gardens have a long history - having been cared for by several generations of keen gardeners, they fell into decline in the mid 20th century but their star is once more in the ascendant, with one walled garden now authentically restored as an ornamental garden and with many interesting features including a long rockery, while a second now produces organically grown vegetables.
Garden plants are offered for sale, and there are tea-rooms opening onto a terrace overlooking the ornamental gardens, also a shop stocking quality “non-tourist” items and collectables And that is far from being the end of the story as converted outbuildings at this remarkable place also offer much of interest, including a genealogy centre (The Mayo North Family History Research Centre, Tel: 096 31809), and a small but expanding rural museum with working blacksmith.
The house itself has great charm: with family portraits, antique furniture, crackling log fires, warm hospitality and good home cooking, it makes a lovely place to come back to after a day in the rugged countryside. The traditionally furnished bedrooms are large, very comfortable and, like their en-suite bathrooms, regularly refurbished; spacious reception rooms include a fine drawing room, with a big log fire and plenty of seating, and a more intimate dining room which makes a fine setting for Susan’s wholesome 5-course dinners, which make predictably good use of local produce.
The gardens are open at all times for residents (without charge), otherwise by appointment.
