This crenellated Victorian mansion is renowned as a fishing hotel and enjoys a most romantic position in 450 acres of ancient woodland on the banks of the Ballynahinch River.

It is also home to one of Connemara’s oldest gardens set out among mature trees and shrubs, on many levels, the extensive landscaped gardens here have long been a point of pride and are open to the public every day throughout the season (there is a small charge, donated to local charities).

The gardens, including a walled kitchen garden, have been under restoration for some time, with the project due for completion by May 2017.

Although impressive by any standards, the atmosphere is relaxed and the castle would make a very comfortable base for a few days - and it is also a lovely place to take a break during the day, as excellent food is served in the hotel’s characterful bar, a mighty high-ceilinged room with a huge fireplace, and many mementoes of the pleasures of rod and hunt.

The tone is set in the foyer, with its huge stone fireplace and ever-burning log fire (which is a cosy place to enjoy afternoon tea), and the many necessary renovations and extensions through the years have been undertaken with great attention to period detail, a policy also carried through successfully in furnishing both public areas and bedrooms, many of which have lovely views over the river.

Fine dinners are served every evening in The Owenmore Restaurant, a bright and elegant room with the classic atmosphere of a splendidly old-fashioned dining room - it is carefully organised to allow as many tables as possible to enjoy its uniquely beautiful river setting and, in the unlikely event that service should ever falter, it could well go unnoticed by guests lost in fascinated observation of happy fisherfolk claiming the last of the fading daylight on the rocks below. In addition, a large terrace has recently been added, allowing for al fresco riverside dining in fine weather, or just a lovely place to enjoy a snackor a drink.

A stay here is always a restorative treat and, after a restful night’s sleep, a Ballynahinch breakfast will give you a good start ahead of a day’s fishing, wilderness walks on the estate, visiting nearby gardens or simply touring the area.
