This much-loved quayside hotel in the centre of Waterford dates back to the early 18th century and it has been owner-run since 1979 by the Cusack family, who have restored the old building to its former glory and take great pride in its constant renewal; it has that indefinable ambience of the well-run privately owned hotel
Centrally located in Waterford City (voted Best Place To Live in Ireland in 2021 in a recent Irish Times competition), the 4-star Granville Hotel makes an ideal base to explore the fascinating 1,000 year history of Ireland’s oldest city, perhaps by taking the Freedom of Waterford Walking Tour (visiting five attractions within the Viking Triangle). The scenic 46km off road cycling and walking trail The Waterford Greenway is also nearby and bikes can be delivered to the hotel.
The hotel itself has many historical connections - with the entrepreneur Charles Bianconi, for example, who established Ireland’s earliest transport system (the restaurant is named after him), also Charles Stuart Parnell, who made many a rousing speech here. It was also the birthplace of Thomas Francis Meagher, who became Governor of Montana; he was a pall bearer at Abraham Lincoln’s Funeral - and also the originator and designer of our national flag, the Irish Tricolour, which was first flown in Waterford in 1848.
The Granville has always had a name for good food and proudly showcases local produce, including of course the unique ‘Waterford Blaa’ bread roll, which is one of only a very small number of Irish Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) products.
The Granville is a lovely comfortable, traditional place to stay with a wonderful pride in its history - but, always in this hotel, it is the service that really makes a visit here memorable.
