This one-off Editor’s Choice Award (the ‘Georgina Campbell Award’) was introduced to highlight the achievements of an establishment that does not fit neatly into any category but deserves special recognition for its vision, and dedication to quality and style: Ray and Jane Byrne’s gorgeous newly extended lakeside lodge, near Athlone. Contrary to the ‘numbers game’ that has recently re-entered the tourism arena (and which we had hoped was relic of the 1960s) we believe that it is in the interests of this country to discourage high volume tourism and, instead, do everything possible to ensure an enriching experience for discerning independent travellers. This Wineport does magnificently, standing proudly as a ‘a sumptuous signpost to the future for the very best of Irish hospitality”. Congratulations to Ray, Jane and all of their excellent staff for making this bold quality statement - such leadership could not be more timely.
