‘Proper country houses’ that have not been over-modernised and remain true to their roots are becoming a rarity these days, but Justin and Jenny Green’s 18th century gem is just right. Surrounded by its own farmland and magnificent wooded grounds, it has wonderful gardens - including a walled kitchen garden, which is the special domain of Justin’s father, Jeremy. It offers relaxed luxury in a gently historical setting, along with an exceptionally warm experience thanks to this hospitable couple, who are committed to continuing the standards of hospitality, comfort, food and drink (including the whey-based Bertha’s Revenge gin, which made its début here), for which this lovely house is renowned. Although perhaps best known as an atmospheric wedding venue in recent years (and it is superb), the focus is now coming back to what it does best – being itself. It is a family home and visiting families are made very welcome, but it is equally a perfect couples’ retreat or a place for friends to gather and catch up. And the wonderfully rustic food is always a joy. Simply magic.
