Hayfield Manor Hotel
Cork’s premier hotel is a luxurious latterday manor house set in two acres of mature trees and gardens near the university, in the south west of the city. Although relatively new, it has the feeling of a large period country house - albeit with some striking contemporary features since the completion of recent renovations - and is managed with warmth and discreet efficiency.
This wedding venues got no formal wedding planning service, but everything will be done to make your day memorable, and extras such as vintage car hire, or a programme for guests staying several days, can be arranged.
For the ceremony, there are several churches to choose from nearby and wedding blessings can be arranged at the hotel, which is a place for those who would like a discreet adult wedding: receptions for around fifty guests are held in an elegantly furnished private dining room and library overlooking the formal garden at the back of the hotel; no evening guests are allowed, amplified music is not permitted and there is no bar extension available - a dull prospect for some, perhaps, but sheer heaven for those who favour quiet relaxation and conversation.
Great pride is taken in the food served at Hayfield Manor and the five-course wedding menu - which includes a choice of main course, at no extra charge - is sure to be a treat, especially for those who are staying overnight in one of the hotel’s spacious suites or guest rooms.
*Killarney Royal Hotel (www.killarneyroyal.ie) is a sister hotel, offering similar standards of discrete luxury.
Flemings Restaurant
Michael and Eileen Fleming’s impressive Georgian house is set on five acres of garden and patio areas on a hillside overlooking the river and city. There is a choice of churches nearby, wedding blessings are possible here and there are plenty of photo opportunities around the house and gardens.
This
wedding venues house has a distinct style and there is a personal touch to everything offered at Fleming’s: drinks offered on arrival include champagne or chilled white wine with a splash of peach liqueur or cassis, for example - and both champagne and house wine are very fairly priced.
The restaurant is in the old drawing rooms, which are linked by double doors and now make a lovely long dining room along the front of the house, with large shuttered windows and all the original features including high ceilings, polished wooden floors and elegant fireplaces - a fine setting for Michael Fleming’s excellent classical and modern French cooking.
The restaurant is ideal for weddings of up to 90 guests, but additional guests can be seated in the cellar wine bar, and a marquee can be hired for larger numbers if required; there is full consultation ahead of the events and items such as a marquee, band, the wedding cake any special floral requirements can be arranged.
Menus, which are very reasonably priced for the quality offered, include a choice of main course at no extra charge, and a hot and cold buffet option is available too.

Cork Golf Club
Cork Golf Club is one of the finest challenges of any golf course in Ireland with an 18 hole championship course over 6,730 yards.
It's made up of heathland terrain with large undulating greens and is located amidst beautiful scenery on the estuary of the River Lee as it enters Cork Harbour.
Founded in 1888 and redesigned in 1927 by Dr. Alister Mackenzie, this championship parkland course is as graceful and mature as its age would suggest.
The club has played host to major Amateur and Professional Championships over the years, including the Irish Open, Irish Professional Championships, Irish Close Championships and the National Finals.
Monkstown Golf Club
Monkstown Golf Club was founded in 1908 and was extended from 9 to 18 holes in 1971. It is a challenging parkland course over 5,663 yards from the back tees and provides a test for all levels of golfer. Monkstown Golf Club enjoys a unique setting overlooking Cork's glorious harbour.
Mature trees feature strongly throughout the course and water comes into play over four holes. The final two holes are noted for being particularly difficult and can make or break your whole round.
The antiquity of the site is evoked by the ruins of the old castle which provided the members with a distinctive club-house before the ravages of time turned the grand old building into an un-inhabitable place.
The shell that remains is a poignant reminder of past glories and of the once-proud building that enhanced such a glorious and significant site when it was built in 1636.

Irish Examiner Cork Food Festival 2012
Thursday 19th - Sunday 22nd July 2012
Following on from the success of last year’s event, this year’s Festival has been expanded with the use of the whole of Fitzgerald’s Park to include a much larger variety of exhibitors, particularly in the artisan food producers section. Entry for kids is free this year and there will be a special section dedicated to the younger “foodies” guaranteed to keep them amused throughout the day with lots of fun activities and entertainers.
A host of well-known chefs who will be appearing and giving cooking demonstrations during the four day festival include Rachel Allen, Paolo Tullio, Darina Allen, and Andrew Rudd; with more names to be confirmed over the next few weeks.
Ernest Cantillon, owner of
Electric Bar & Restaurant and Festival Organiser stated “This is a Cork event run by locals and very much for the people of Cork, to celebrate the wealth of talent and the abundance of fine food products in the region. It will be a chance for everyone to meet the teams behind some of Cork’s greatest culinary success stories, as well as new talent on the food scene - where restaurants will be exhibiting alongside their food producers – a real farm to fork experience.”
Ernest added “A big thing for us, taking over the complete organisation of the event was to make the event as inclusive as possible, so we have reduced the price of the ticket to just €12. Also we have made sampling much easier with the removal of the payment by tokens. Feedback from last year was that this was a little complicated – and we want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to try out something new at the Festival.”
Tickets, priced at €12 each, are available from Electric Bar & Restaurant on the South Mall, Sober Lane on Sullivans Quay, from their website (see below) and are also available from the Irish Examiner office on Lapps Quay.
